Spirit was formed with the intention to combine jazz, rock, classical, and folk with a mystical orientation. Led by the family duo of Hendrix-inspired guitarist Randy California and his uncle, jazz drummer Ed Cassidy (whose shaved head--some 20 years ahead of its time--was the band's visual focus), Spirit had a few idiosyncratic hits such as "I Got A Line On You." The band didn't reach its prime until Twelve Dreams, after which they promptly broke up. A loosely constructed sci-fi concept album, it contains the band's biggest hit, the ecological "Nature's Way" (complete with booming kettle drums), the surreal rock of "Animal Zoo," and the orchestral psychedelia of "Life Has Just Begun." Bristling with ideas, energy, and California's meaty guitar, Twelve Dreams exemplifies the best of the late '60s experimentalism. --Steven Mirkin

AN UNAPRECIATED MASTERPIECE (2006-07-22) THIS ALBUM/CD/DVD IS A TO DIE FOR PIECE OF WORK.THE BAND ITSELF IS COMPRIZED OF LITTLE KNOWN MAINSTREAM MUCICIANS. THEY'VE ONLY SEEN LIMITED SUCCESS UNTIL THE RELEASE OF THIS ALBUM. IT'S A CONEPTUAL ALBUM THAT COMBINES TERRIFIC TUNES AND AN AIRY AND HAUNTINGLY THEME. THE MUSIC IS EXCELLENT FROM START TO FINISH AND FLOWS FREELY AND FLAWLEESLY FROM ONE SONG TO THE NEXT. THE BAND (SPIRIT) WAS ALSO EXCELLENT LIVE.THIS MASTERPIECE IS ONE THAT WILL STAND OUT IN ANYONE'S COLLECTION AND I GIVE 5 STARS.
The Best Album By An Excellent Band (2004-07-16) I found the music on this CD to be absolutely haunting.Don't wait till you hear this band on your favorite classic rock station, even during the 70s this band was never appreciated for their incredible talent. I had the priviledge of seeing Spirit a couple times and this is the finest of the material they did back in the day.Be the envy of your friends with your knowledge of this legendary classic rock innovators.
a lot of fun (2004-06-08) I had a lot of fun listening to this album. I didn't know about it since a few weeks ago. I think Randy's guitar playing is interesting, and so are the drums. And it was all done 34 years ago!
Duh, I dunno, it sounds good. (2004-02-19) Commercial, OK. Accessible, a little more gentle. I hear all of the false notes clearly as I listen to this album some 30 years after I first heard it - no doubt more clearly; the playback equipment is so much better now. So what is it? Am I undereducated? Yeah, I don't remember what a diminished 7th chord is. Am I a dupe? I don't think so. This music touches me, it pleases me, and it's really not just nostalgia: I can't listen to Iron Butterfly or the Mamas and the Papas now, though they were in my library then. The Twelve Dreams of Dr. Sardonicus is exuberant; it's fun. The songs are melodic, far more so than those on Sergeant Pepper (anyone else find the Beatles boring?). Are the production facilities/skill of the control room technicians that important? In my middle age I have come to prefer folk art to the "fine" art that was my major in college - the words "slick" and "glib" seem worse criticism than "amateurish". This is "popular" music, folks. By the way, I think "condescending" is a worse criticism than "uninformed". And good taste is usually nothing more than deference to consensus of the elite.
Great album, excellent-sounding remaster (2004-01-29) This is one gem of an album, an all-time favorite. Back then there were albums that were great from beginning to end, with no weak tracks. This is one of them. The last song is sadder than the upbeat tracks that precede it, and I've always felt sad that the album was nearly over when I heard it start. While the 1996 remaster from Sony has 4 bonus tracks, they are not up to the quality of the rest of the album, and they are not the reason to buy the remaster. They will be interesting to some die-hard Spirit fans and some others. The SOUND QUALITY of the Sony remaster is WONDERFUL. There is so much subtlety, and a complete separation of vocals. I hear things I never heard in it before, especially with headphones. If you have the older 12-track CD, if you love the album, and you have good ears after all these years, it's worth it to upgrade. Now listening to the old one makes it sound like I've got cotton in my ears. One oddity: the track "Mr. Skin" has a slightly different opening than the original LP and the 12-track CD. It's only for a few seconds, then the mix sounds the same (only better). I'm pretty sure it's the same take, just a different mix-down. And it's not a bad thing, it's actually interesting, just different from what I'm used to. Listening to eco-themed songs like "Nature's Way" (or "Fresh Garbage" from their first album) impresses me about how far ahead of their time this band was. In an age where Mad Cow disease and SARS appear to be caused by disgusting and cruel treatment of our food animals, "...it's nature's way of telling you something's wrong" seems more current than ever. When buying remastered albums from Amazon sellers (other than direct from Amazon), be sure to ask the seller whether the CD they are selling is the remastered one that you want. At least one seller out there was selling the old 12-track CD attached to the Amazon page for the remastered CD. Fortunately I asked first and avoided the grief.
