Amazon.com essential recording

Karl Bohm was one of this century's great Mozart conductors--a fact that's apt to be forgotten in the flood of authentic instrument productions, many of them on DG's associated labels. He conducted Mozart with real love and affection, maintaining moderate tempos, allowing each work's gorgeous melodies a chance to sing and breathe. Mozart's symphonic music has its roots in the opera house, and so did Bohm. Listening to the witty woodwind interjections in the finale of Symphony No. 39, for example, you can readily imagine the witty exchanges of different characters in one of Mozart's comic operas. These beautifully recorded versions of Mozart's greatest symphonies belong in the collection of every fan of the composer. --David Hurwitz
Chronique amazon.fr

--Pierre Graveleau

40 Years On Still Among The Best (2004-07-08)

You might call Karl Bohm's Mozart old fashioned but don't take that as a put down. He does not take up the more recent practice of taking every repeat causing some works to go over 40 minutes. Not for Bohm the fine points of the latest academic trend but instead a a very fine feel for the spirit of Mozart's music. If the dramatic grand gesture is needed then Bohm magnificently provides it. If the music is livelier and more fleet of foot then Bohm sparkles with a wry grin. Overall this is Mozart to enjoy and Bohm never fails the listener. The 40 year old recording needs no excuses and neither do you for not buying these truly wonderful performances.
Simply the best (2004-06-21)

As Karajan, Abbado, and Kleiber are for Beethoven, Bohm and Bernstein (along with Walter and Szell) are for Mozart.

This double-decker comprised of the final six symphonies by Mozart (Symphony No. 37 was lost unfortunately and the original score remains undiscovered) is a MUST-HAVE for a Mozart fan. Bohm truly gives Mozart at its highest. Forget hesitating or regarding the price you should buy it simple as "1-2-3" and play music.

Wonderful and Intense... (2004-06-05)

The intensity of Bohm's ideas about Mozart truly shine through...he is clearly the best in the Symphonies as an interpreter...Szell is so willful and contrived in comparison(sound on Szell is poor as well)....

this is one of the finest Jupiter's ever as Well!!

Nice. (2004-03-23)

It is a nice recordings. But if this is the right Mozart style... I am not sure. Anyway, nice to hear it!
a review for those new to mozart (2004-02-18)

if it was mahler's ideal that the symphony should encompass the whole world, it was mozart's realization some century beforehand. he always was a preternatural chap.

mozart's great genius allows for a natural juxtaposition of tragic utterance with moments of great radiance in the space of a few bars. yet the world does not always concern itself with such depth and any quality of fantasy, wit, happiness, tension or mild despair can be found within these works. mozart's symphonies are a whole world of life - not a linear journey from darkness to light or its discomfiting alternative. they are masterpieces from the surface sheen to their untold depths.

yet as ambiguous as all this sounds, there is always an unequivocal and refreshing ray of light in the music that contrasts with the undertow of tension present in much other great art (be it shakespeare, beethoven, mahler, picasso, hitchcock, ligeti....). in today's world especially, mozart's ouevre seems irreproducible at its most fundamental level.

there are more qualified reviews that will discuss the merits of individual conductors in these pieces. all i can say is that bohm's dg performances embody all of my contrivances (and rid them of their noxiousness) and much more besides. bohm does not inhabit the extremeties of tempo and dynamics that a conductor like harnoncourt straddles. combine this with his liberal approach to repeats (which, i have to say, works especially well in symphony 40) and these symphonies are decidely shorter than would usually be expected. it goes to show that the world need not be subjected to the vast creations of mahler to capture its ineffable essence, it just needs the focused genius of a mozart for its narration.

to finish, mozart's late symphonies, and equally his piano concertos, are the perfect places to begin and end any music collection. they will last the lifetimes they depict.
