a one woman dynamo! (2005-11-16) i actually owned the original vinyl version of this, & the piece de resistance of this was the "macarthur park suite" on the end of side 4, which was total breathtaking magic, this is now available of the 12in singles album, so all is not lost on that front, thankfully!also, i love about this album, "the way we were" is a more emotionally fuelled version than glad & the pips, dare i say!also, "mimi's song" - sooo cute!this album is special to me as my nan bought it for me one christmas, so, sentimental value, but i've always absolutely loved donna, listening to her music just transports me back to my teens, the fasions, the music, the discos, the laughs & the great times!
This misleading CD is not the original vinyl album version!! (2003-11-02) Having owned the original vinyl album, this CD is missing the all important 18 minute studio recording of the "MacArthur Park Suite". Even though there is a disclaimer in fine print on the inside jacket explaining why the "Suite" had to be removed and replaced with a numbing slow-tempo track, the record company was wrong in releasing this CD with the original jacket cover from the vinyl. Without opening the jewel box plastic wrapping, one would never know why the original live and studio recorded tracks were not faithfully reproduced. However, in my opinion, this CD contains the greatest live disco recording ever: on a scale similar to Peter Frampton's "Frampton Comes Alive" 1976 album. If this CD was a true reproduction of the vinyl, I would have rated it 5 out of 5 stars.
A Magical, Mystical Night !! (2003-07-24) "Why don't you follow me on my magical, mystical journey through time and love!" So says the Diva, as she segues from "Once Upon A Time, Fairy Tale High" and into "Spring Affair" (then proceeds to sing all her early hits up to that time)on this great live CD. Summer lives up to her proclamation above and beyond belief. This is Donna's first "live recording," and is no less than remarkable. She proves beyond any reasonable doubt that she "can sing!" And boy does she! Just listen to her sing "I Love You." All her hits "Love to Love You, Try Me.., I Feel Love" etc. etc. live and on stage are seamless and ageless (even today.) Her voice has got the power, range and subtlety (with that great dramatic quality) when needed. She not only tackles her disco hits but also conquers some "standards" (My Man Medley: The Man I Love, I Got It Bad & Some Of These Days) and they are performed impeccably. Most noticeable is her torching rendition of "The Way We Were," this is a vocal triumph for Summer and she makes the song her own!! Then, the touching "Mimi's Song" which is a lovely, bittersweet homage to her daughter, whom she hardly saw due to Summer's superstardom at the time. All in all, this is a MUST have for any Summer fan. The live recordings end appropriately enough with "Last Dance", Summer's classic tour de force, and this live version can proudly stand side by side with the studio version, and has slight lyrical changes ("ain't I even worth a dime a dance, how about just half a chance?" - you bet your sweet bippy you are!!) that make it the crowd pleaser it is, as well as making it the perfect ending to this extraordinary "magical, mystical night!!" Enjoy!!
Donna Summers Best album (2003-02-01) I feel compelled to review this CD although I am not familiar with this on CD format, just the vinyl lp. Donna is a legendary singer with a great instrument. She was primarily known for her orgasmic vocals on "Love To Love You Baby". Here she proves she is much more than that. All you have to listen to here is the way she can sing right along with a full orchestra behind her and she never sounded better. You must skip ahead and listen to "My Man Medley" to understand what I am trying to say. This woman can sing any style and shine through. She is one of our greatest singers ever. I grew up listening to her. I love this album.
A great live album (2003-01-24) I'm a live album junkie, so I think this record was pretty good. This was my first real exposure to Donna Summer when I was a kid, a lot of my relatives had this album. I bought my own copy recently, and I must admit I am just as impressed now as I was then. The thing I have always like about Donna Summer is that she has a VOICE. And that is something most dance acts just do not have, even today. She comes out of the gate strong on this record with "Once Upon a Time," a great openener. Like most live albums, she's banging out the hits a a fairly rapid pace, so don't expect any of the suites you hear on those early records. Nonetheless, she gives them the same "mystical" treatment she used to describe the night of the show. My favorite early Donna songs, "Try Me, I Know We Can Make It" and "Spring Affair" are awesome because unlike with the studio versions, she is singing in full voice and not the falsetto. They sound even better that way. The second side is, if I'm not mistaken, mostly from the "I Remember Yesterday" record where she sings the old songs. She gives the oldies some good treatment, even it's a little Vegasy in spots. She works the hell out of "Last Dance," the shows closer. The live sides, just like her studio work, are a real treat for someone in search of the right blend of a beat and a voice. The record's crowning achievement though is "MacArthur Park Suite" a frenetic yet lush epic music journey. For nearly 18 minutes, she moves from "MacArthur Park" to "One of a Kind" to "Heaven Knows" then back to "MacArthur Park." The single "Heaven Knows" has always been simply amazing to me, so I think that is the best part of the whole piece. The songs blend perfectly, and it is not odd at all to me that "MacArthur Park" and "Heaven Knows" became smash hits. Even the suite topped the dance chart. I find it odd that they didn't include it in this cd edition, but as someone said, its available on many other collections on cd. Even without that song, grab this live album, it's well worth it.
