Amazon.com Essential Video
This warmhearted TV offering based on Mitch Albom's nonfiction bestseller of the same name dives right into the action, with Morrie (Jack Lemmon) collapsing within the first three minutes. Then it's cut to Mitch's hectic life as a sports columnist cum television host and long-term, often long-distance boyfriend. But this Mick Jackson-directed film slows considerably after the introductions as former student Mitch (Hank Azaria) learns his beloved professor is dying of ALS (Lou Gehrig's disease). He reconnects with his mentor and begins learning from him all over again, this time about life. Oprah Winfrey produced this 88-minute film, and her renowned touchy-feely quality is prominent as Mitch learns to love both Morrie and his own girlfriend. Azaria, better known for somewhat goofy roles (The Birdcage, the dogwalker on TV's Mad About You) conveys an intelligent, if edgy dignity, and double Oscar winner Lemmon turns in his usual exquisite performance, giving even the most obvious moments touches of subtlety. --Kimberly Heinrichs

Genuine. (2003-05-31) A genuinely touching movie is a rare thing. Attempting to pull at our heart-strings often results in a lot of sap and drama, without much substance. However, Tuesdays with Morrie is heartfelt, somber, funny, and sad. The movie details a relationship (The film is adapted from a best selling nonfiction book) between a sports columnist, and his beloved professor which he learns is dying of Lou Gehrigs disease. What follows is a look at the short, poingant relationship they shared. You see, Morrie was a man of the world. He often showed a keen insight into the nature of man. He did much to teach his former student about life, often quoting W.H. Auden's poem "September 1st, 1939" The movie, as the book, is filled with philisophical, as well as practical insights. Deeply moving, even while not being cinematically brilliant.
The final lesson (2003-03-30) I am a 17 year old male, I work, and am very into weight-lifting and I am the typical guy, showing no emotions.... This movie broke me into tears. It is, by far, the msot heart-felt and adoring movie I could have imagined. I also do not read, I simply do not have time. After this movie I bought the book the next day and had it read within the week, and that is on top of school and a 40+ hour/week job. This story touched me and moved me in a way that nothing else has. I have a new outlook on life and any dispair, frustration, or sorrow has been eradicated and I finally have the prerequisite to understand life's meaning.
a pick me up video (2003-02-11) Although the story is sad, it is excellent acting and the understanding of relationships and priorities is excellent. I saw the movie 4 times before I purchased it.
a great film (2002-08-14) i watched the film for the first time on wednesday 14th august and i can honestly say that it is a very heartfelt film. the first time i watched it brought me to tears. i enjoyed watching this film because i felt like that before when some one close to me died and i can honestly say that it will always remain in my heart it showed me there is a lot more in life! watch it!
Thanks Mrs. Rhymes (2002-05-23) If you haven't read the book, that's the first thing you should do. I was forced to read this book by my teacher, having not read many books in my life, but found it to be one of the best books I've read. The movie is great. But, you should read the boook to better understand what Mitch, the writer is feeling during those last moments he had with his tutor on life. Of course the movie adds a little more drama by making the story between Mitch and Janine, his fiance, more prominent. Overall the movie captures the idea of the book, of a old man who has come in to terms with his eminent death and leaves behind his notes on how to live a more fulfilling life. I would highly reccomend the book and for those who needs more of a visual media, to get the movie.
