Hunchback is gritty tale of persecution in 15th century France that focuses on a sinister fire-and-brimstone religious figure (Richard Harris) whose own fanaticism is tested when he finds himself lusting after a gypsy girl, Esmeralda (Salma Hayek). Meanwhile, the deformed bell-ringer, Quasimodo (Mandy Patinkin), also takes an interest in her, forcing him to choose between her and his loyalty to the priest. This made-for-TV movie is just one of many cinematic adaptations of Victor Hugo's classic novel, The Hunchback of Notre Dame, and coincided with Disney's hugely successful animated blockbuster version. Written by John Fasano and directed by Peter Medak, the characters come off a little flat, but the direction is stylish. --D.K. Latta

The Hunchback 1997 (2004-03-17) This was a wonderful movie. I am look forword to the DVD when it come out. The acting was great. One of the best movies in a long time.
The worst version... by far.. (2002-03-13) I first read "Hunchback of Notre Dame" in the sixth grade. And since then I've saw every movie version except an English TV version put out in the mid 70's. This version is terrible - period! The best part of this version is the casting of Salma Hayek as Esmeralda. If you've read the novel and seen this movie you know this version does not go by the novel (or any of the prior versions) at all. The sequence is out of order, characters deleted and invented, and Quasimodo is advocating a free press. Also, real fans will note that several lines from the 1939 version have been used in this version verbatim. The sad thing is, given the talent of this cast, with proper writing this could have been the best version ever. Sadly, it appears, this version was SNAFU from the get go. Even the 1957 Anthony Quinn version is better and it was generally considered the worst sequel before this piece came along. If you want the classic "Hunchback" buy Chaney's 1923 version; If you want the sentimental favorite buy Laughton's 1939 version; If you want a modern version buy Hopkin's 1983 effort. But whatever you do - avoid this version if your a true fan - this one stinks! Only hardcore Salma Hayek fans will appreciate it!
faithful and effective retelling of the classic (2001-07-24) A surprisingly moving treatment from the Turner Network movie factory. The Hunchback features commanding performances from Harris, Patinkin, and Hayek along with superb sets and literate direction. Neither sentimental overkill nor dry exercise, the film is content to tell the allegorical tale of the "partly made" Quasimodo with sincerity and assurance. If you missed this on its original TV broadcast, treat yourself to this video (and how about a DVD release?).
Modern notre dam (2000-08-02) Remake of this classic story by Peter Medak (The Krays/ Romeo is Bleeding) . A difficult task since most of the previous Hunchback movies were main successes .
Victory over Victor (2000-05-24) The giants of Turner Home Video have scored yet another victory. This time they defeated Victor Hugo and proved that the American entertainment industry is still capable of keeping the world literature at bay. The producers had no thought for themselves. Without any hunches and avoiding to look back, they elevated the Notre Dame de Paris to the level of an amusement park. Instead of choosing the easy way of creating their own story and setting it in Columbus, OH or Dallas, TX, they joined Quasimodo in his fight for free press. Now we are finally free of prejudice to respect the author and the originality of his creation. Productions like this one will liberate the future generations from classics once and forever!
