Are you aware that 75 percent of daily conversation is negative? While you may not have noticed that, you are no doubt aware of the stress and hassles of everyday life. Loretta LaRoche, an adjunct member on the faculty of the Behavior Institute of Medicine, which is an affiliate of Harvard Medical School, is determined to break you out of your cycle of negativity. Half comedian, half therapist, Loretta wants you to see the lighter side of situations. After all, optimists live longer. "Pessimists are accurate," she says, "but they don't live as long."
In this hour-long video, The Joy of Stress, Loretta humorously teaches you how to adopt a critical tenet of Alcoholics Anonymous: "fake it till you make it"--how to act cheerful until it begins to come naturally. Life needs more belly laughs, she points out, and she teaches you exactly how to have them. You only thought you knew the proper way to laugh. Peppering her seminar with stories about her own Italian grandmother, her husband, and herself, Loretta's act surpasses that of many lesser comedians. Using different hats and different attitudes, Loretta will teach you how to loosen up and have you laughing (at her as well as at yourself) while you're doing it. This video works well by itself or in conjunction with her other two tapes, Humor Your Stress and How Serious Is This? --Jenny Brown

Not recommended (2004-01-27) Bought this video partly because so many other reviewers said how funny they found it, and because we thought it might have been useful for people under stress in our organisation. Three of us watched it together and were very disappointed. We didn't find it funny at all - in fact, we didn't even find it amusing. Maybe it appeals more to a US/Canadian sense of humor? (I don't mean to imply anything about the US/Canadian senses of humor other than it might be different from ours). It didn't offer any useful strategies for dealing with stress - it was just Loretta making weak jokes about things that stress people. Some of the info was ok if you had never read anything on stress at all before, but it was pretty basic and not useful to us at all. In addition, we found Loretta's voice to be akin to fingernails scraping down a blackboard. One of us could only sit through about 10 minutes of it - the voice was just too stressful for him! Would not recommend it as a stress resource. Might be ok as comedy if it appeals to your sense of humor - but it didn't appeal to ours.
Funniest Video (2003-05-09) I watched this video while walking on the treadmill, and I had to keep stopping to go to the bathroom because I was laughing so hard. I suffer from most (okay, all) of what she makes fun of. I have been struggling with depression, and have decided to watch this video every day for a month while working out and see what happens. I'm also giving it as a birthday present for everyone I know who is too serious about life. I really didn't expect much from this video except that I thought it might be helpful, but Loretta is as funny as Bill Cosby. She has really changed my mindset on life.
Fantastic (2002-09-25) I watched this video at a class and had to have it. I am a HR Manager and thought this video would do a world of good at work. It puts a lighter side on the day to day stress of the common person.
humor is a great way to deal with stress (2002-07-25) I am part of a group of twelve ladies who are in a Life Skills program. We watched the video The Joy of Stress today. It was so good. We laughed all the way through it. Loretta has a unique and wonderful way of dealing with stress. I will certainly look at my stress in a different light from now on. It really showed me that I can laugh at myself.I have dealt with a lot of stress in my life and have never dealt with it in a healthy way.Over the last few years with the help of Alcoholics Anonymous I have been learning how to deal with all aspects of my life in a healthier way. Now after watching this video I have found another awesome tool for dealing with stress.A big thanks to Loretta. Sincerely,Cathie Phillips
