The fictional story line of Stonewall is framed by a piece of re-created gay history that has been chronicled before, primarily in such documentaries as Before Stonewall and After Stonewall. But here director Nigel Finch constructs a multilayered entertainment set in and around the Stonewall riots of June 1969 (in New York) that marked the start of gay rights and activism. Stonewall is engaging and sympathetic to the plight of gays everywhere, who survived a world where homosexuality was a fate worse than death (and often resulted in it). This is a movie about survival, oppression, and the self-loathing that is inflicted by a world that refuses to understand anything different from mainstream morality. Within that dynamic is a familiar subplot about a young rube, Matty (Fred Weller), who comes from the Midwest to the big city in order to find himself and falls for a drag queen named La Miranda (Guillermo Díaz) in the process. Finch, who died prior to the film's completion (it was finished by producer Christine Vachon), uncovers something joyous in the angst of his characters and in the factual context of material that might have seemed overworked in less committed hands. --Paula Nechak

Great version of the Stonewall story (2003-01-01) All accurate? Perhaps not, but a well told story. The actors do a great job in their roles and any liberties taken with history are either reverential or entertaining. The drag queen version of a greek chorus is too cool.
This movie sucked! (2002-02-18) There really isn't much more to say, but I'm sure I can find something... Let's see, the acting was next to terrible, the plot lacked anything dynamic, and for the most part it was just boring. It did have it's good points though (the most important one being that it eventually ended). There were some nice butt shots, unfortunately they weren't of very nice butts. There were some ok drag numbers. The only decent part of this movie was the riot scene, and that doesn't happen untill the end (hope I'm not giving away the ending!) Anyway, I would not reccomend this movie to anyone!
Stonewall six stars!!! (2002-01-25) I thought I should own and watch this movie, since it was on the birth of equal rights for Gays (being the good little queer I am). It was so funny, and educational. I can not believe I had not heard of it until I browsed the Gay/Lesbian section of Amazon. The acting is great, and the period clothing is dead on. Don't rent it, you'll just want to go buy it afterwards, so put your rental $$ towards to purchase.
Who Knew? (2001-07-17) I never knew any of the struggles that gays faced in this country. I have always been around people that were always accepting. This movie opened my eyes to the injustices that sparked the Gay revolution. This movie opened my eyes. It made me angry, emotional, and truly grateful to the men and women that stood up for thier rights as human beings. It is an AMAZING MOVIE!!!!
if only all history lessons could be like this! (2001-06-30) The riots at the Stonewall bar are still remembered yearly during the Gay Pride/Mardi Gras events all over the world, although I don't think everyone realises this. It shows how much things have changed since then. This movie tells the story of transvestite Miranda (Guillermo Diaz, who also plays in the wonderful I Think I Do), and how she experienced the events leading up to the riots. Even though the story is serious, the film deals with it in a very light way with many funny moments. The scenes with some of the transvestites miming to songs fit in very well with the rest. A great film that makes you realise how difficult it must have been (and even now I recognise people who think gays and lesbians should adjust to whatever the straight world wants us to be in order to be accepted, whereas I believe everyone should be able to be whatever they want to be (without hurting anyone else)), but leaving you with a very good feeling afterwards.
