Great for Exam Takers (2008-07-09)

As the name implies, this is an Exam Prep book. With great insight into how the exam questions are written, it was the only book I needed. I passed the PMP exam on the first try with the following study method:- attempt to use the PMBOK... very dry and I made it to chapter 3 (it's a great reference book, but painful to read/study from)- bought this PM Exam Prep book- read it through once, much easier- book marked a number of sections and re-read those once more before the exam- wrote the exam, passed. The PMP was one of the toughest exams I've written. Knowing the mindset of the people writing the questions for it was a huge help and that's where this book really stands out. It's got activities and other great study tools if you choose to use them, as well as a few sample questions to give you an idea of what you'll be getting into.Note that Version 4 of the PMBOK is coming out late 2008 which means testing on that version will commence late 2009. This always causes some headaches, so if you're going for your PMP, buy this book and get the exam done with! If you're not going for your PMP, skip this book.

I bought this book after reading reviews on amozon.ca, amoazon.com and other websites. There were many positive comments among few negative ones. I went with the voice of majority. I was wrong! Obviously every book on PMP exam is supposed to cover the core knowledge areas and process groups. If someone reads any book along with the PMBOK Guide 2 or 3 times, the chances of passing the real exam go high obviously. The real questions for assessing the utility of a book are: Is the reading worth your time? Does the author try to develop understanding of the subject and its contents in a simplified way? Is the book self-sufficient, or it encourages reliance on the other products from the same author to supplement your readings. Based on these questions, I am of the opinion that Rita's this book is not a better choice. I bought the book about 6 months ago. After reading few pages I lost my motivation. Reasons: too many lists, tables (Rita's processes), and inadequate explanation. i think it is focused on momorization than concept building. Sometime you might think that it is more like a workbook than a book. Someone mentioned in another review that the book is not professional looking. I tend to agree with it - large page size, more number of lines per page, relatively lesser font. Lot many empty spaces on the pages (for you to think and write.) Last week I found "Head First PMP: A Brain-Friendly Guide to Passing the Project Management Professional Exam (Head First) [ILLUSTRATED] (Paperback)". This book offers a simple and light reaing. It leads you through the real life projects, in a simple, illustrasted, thought provoking and concept developing manner. I read it once (scanned once) and passed the exam yesterday. I also read the PMBOK guide once.

Passed the PMP on the first try, greatly due to this book and the PM FasTrack exam simulation CD software (also by the same author). To pass the exam, I recommend:1. Buy the PMBOK book.2. Do formal training.3. Get the PM PrepCast.4. Get this book.5. Get the PM Fastrack simulation software. Then you can:1. Do the formal training (online or in classroom). Read the PMBOK cover/cover.2. Do 2nd read through of PMBOK and listen to the PM Prepcast which summarizes the PMBOK chapter by chapter.3. Read Rita's PM Prep book. Use the PM FastTrack simulation software to test your knowledge of each chapter.4. Once you are at at least 75% average on all your questions, run 4 hour exam simulations. 5. Finish by running a few SuperPMP exam simulations.6. Once you get 75-85% grade on your SuperPMP exams, you're ready to write the real thing.Good luck.

I passed my PMP exam on my 1st try without attending a preparation course. In addition to reading the PMBOK, I purchased 2 books: PMP exam prep from Rita Mulcahy and The PMP exam from Andy Crowe My unique goal with these books was to pass the exam, not to become a better PM. To me Andy Crowes book is better than Rita Mulcahy. Rita's book is good, it may have more info than Andy Crowe's book but is less well organized, less clear. Rita's book is organized with the same chapters than the PMBOK, which makes it simple to study both together. My recommendation is to read the chapter in Rita's book (or Andy's book if you go for this one) 1st and then only to read the corresponding PMBOK chapter, it than seems less dry.The negative and patronizing comments of this book are somewhat annoying but the book is easy to read and has plenty of exercises. Rita recommends memorizing the planning activities and proposes her own list with some wording which is different from the PMBOK wording, but I preferred to stick with the PMBOK terminology as Andy Crowe is doing. I memorized the formulas and the list of 44 processes organized by Process Group and knowledge areas (table 3.45 in PMBOK, 3rd edition) and this helped me to find the inputs, outputs which you cannot memorize. According to me, Reading the PMBOK once, the book of Rita at least twice and practice the test exams should be sufficient to pass. Last comments, I found the questions on the exam, about the same level of difficulty than in Rita's book.
Success in a Book!! (2007-12-13)

Read this book, do all of the excercises, then read it again and you will be in a very good position to pass the PMP exam. The veteran and 'not-so-veteran Project Manager will definitely benefit from Rita's book.
