great cookbook for a new cook that never goes out of style (2008-04-02)
I love this cookbook. I bought this cookbook for myself 5 years ago when I decided to become a vegetarian, and wanted to learn how to cook more than just eggs and tofu. Not only are the recipes pretty tasty, but they are simple, creative, and easy to follow. This cookbook greatly informed my style as a cook, and still remains a book that I regulary turn to both as a point of reference and for inspiration. This is a great book for anyone who is curious about vegetarian food and cooking, and who likes to spend time in the kitchen. I would especially recommend this book for new cooks, as it has a variety of vegetarian recipes, all which are forgiving and will lead you to becoming a creative cook yourself!

A favorite for 25 years (2008-01-06)
I have used this cookbook off and on for 20 years. A friend recently made Gado-Gado sauce (a peanut sauce) over salad that is from Moosewood for dinner, and now I am going back to check out the book again-to review some recipes I used in the past and try some new ones. The quiche recipe is easy and delicous - great for family or guests. I always make extra to freeze for future use. I also love the vegetarian borscht, even though I never liked borscht (beet soup) before making this recipe.

SPECIAL NOTE TO HARDIN TERRELL OF HOMER AK. I TOO GOT SUCKED IN BY THE "NEW RECIPES FROM MOOSEWOOD RESTAURANT". FORGETABLE! BUT DONT GIVE UP THE REAL "NEW MOOSEWOOD COOKBOOK" IS OUT THERE - TRY AGAIN ITS WORTH IT. MY FIRST COPY OF THE ORIGINAL BOOK WAS BORROWED, AND STOLEN BY A "FRIEND". I WAS DELIGHTED WHEN I SAW IT ADVERTISED AND ORDERED IT, BUT GOT THE MINI-BOOK INSTEAD. I'M STUBBORN SO I REORDERED AND THE REAL "NEW MOSEWOOD COOKBOOK" ARRIVED TODAY. IT'S NOT THE ONE I USED TO OWN, BUT IT IS SUPER, AND IT WILL PROVIDE SUPPER TONIGHT. I'M ABLE TO SUBSTITUTE SOYMILK FOR MILK AND SOY CHEESE FOR CHEESE SO IT IS A WONDERFUL ADDITION TO MY VEGAN COOKBOOKS. GOOD LUCK HARDIN, TRY AGAIN YOU TOO CAN BECOME A COOKBOOK ADDICT

A cookbook that I actually use! (2004-06-06)
Loving to cook, and loving to read, I enjoy cookbooks immensely. This also leads to a sizeable collection, most of which are so esoteric or old-fashioned (WWII rationing, etc.) or unhealthy that they are fun to peruse, but that's it. The New Moosewood Cookbook is awesome!! Not only are the recipes healthy and fun to read, they are incredibly flavourful and satisfying. Ms Katzen's book is in her own script, and her comments and tips about the recipes endearing. She also has a comprehensive index that is better than any I have ever seen. Having made at least half of the recipes in this book, I have only disliked one. If you love good, not-dull, but not overly complicated recipes, The New Moosewood Cookbook is for you.

Cheesy (2004-03-05)
I've never been a fan of Katzen's cookbooks. The original recipes were drenched in cheese, cream and butter. "Ethnic" recipes (except, perhaps, for those drawing on her own heritage) tended to be bland and inauthentic. Although the newer edition promises to correct these faults, I don't find that the food is substantially different. Bleah.
