The far north of Europe and its thriving animal population are examined in exquisite detail in this installment of the Wild Europe series produced by PBS. The area from Norway, Sweden, and Finland northward for 1,000 miles proves to be a bountiful hunting ground for the camera, as animals ranging from enormous polar bears to small arctic birds are masterfully photographed. A mother polar bear hunts and teaches her cub to take its first steps in a forbidding white landscape, and the ghostly shapes of beluga whales glide between the floes of ice. As summer comes to the Arctic, birds, foxes, and reindeer frolic, as well as constantly feed, in a landscape that comes gloriously alive (though a young polar bear suffers in the relative heat). The photography in this series is consistently lovely, and this particular installment is a particular cause of wonder as animals are filmed in startling close-ups in impossibly remote locations. The Arctic ecosystem is complex, and the interaction of various species is covered in some detail. The narration is always intelligent and entertaining, and the insightful content and gorgeous photography combine to provide a startling examination of an unexpectedly vibrant, if isolated, part of the globe. --Robert J. McNamara
