King Tut was great, but the ancient Egyptians didn't have a monopoly on preserving bodies. In Nova's boxed set Ice Mummies, we see three very different stories: Return of the Iceman, which recounts the study of a 5,000-year-old man found in the Italian Alps; Frozen in Heaven, a look at the evidence for Inca human sacrifice, which is so well preserved in the Peruvian Andes; and Siberian Ice Maiden, a tale of the clash between scientists and natives for the rights to a 2,400-year-old woman's body. Each film is haunting in its own way, yet provides an engrossing look into the nature of archaeological study; finds of such antiquity are rare, but perfectly preserved bodies are truly few and far between.
