Brutally bad (2008-07-10) Others have outlined the plot, so I just have to add my agreement that it was weak, the characters two-dimensional and not really likeable, and the editing was pretty brutal. I'm glad I got it from the library. For good chick lit, check out Marian Keyes, Emily Giffin, some of Wendy Holden's, Sheila O'Flanagan, and of course Sophie Kinsella.
I kept waiting ..... (2008-06-20) I really wanted to enjoy this novel. No matter how far I read, it just never got off the ground. The story lines were weak as were the characters. There was no depth to this novel in any form. A good beach read....maybe. I could not reccommend this novel to others.
I wanted to like this....but just couldn't! (2008-06-08) I am an avid reader, but I have never felt the need to post a review until I read this book. I am currently living abroad, and with a long journey ahead of me a few days ago, I was delighted to come accross this book in the very limited English language book section of my local train station. Having enjoyed Lauren Weisberger's last 2 books, I was certain my train trip would fly by...I couldn't have been more wrong. This book was so disappointing! I am no expert, but considering the fact that she has already published 2 bestselling books, I would have expected Ms. Weisberger to have the ability to draw me in to her writing, characters, and storyline much better than she did. The book just did not flow! Frequently I had to keep turning back a page to make sure that I hadn't accidently skipped a page or missed a paragraph. It felt as if scenes were just thrown in because the author or someone she knows had once experienced them and she felt they would be funny to recreate. However, they seemed to just abruptly end without advancing or supporting the plot leaving me rather confused (i.e. the trip to Curaco/Bonaire the main characters embark on). I could never really sympathize or relate to the characters even though we are in the same stage of life, and I felt there was nothing to really motivate them through their journey. I was simply left with a ''who cares'' kind of feeling. Although I did finish the book, it was simply because I was hoping that it would get better, and the other alternative involved staring out the train window for 5 hours. Although this review probably won't discourage diehard fans of 'The Devil Wears Prada'' or ''Everyone Worth Knowing'', I really hope that Lauren Weisberger's next offering is a step up from this one. Even then, I would not risk buying the next one, but instead wait for it at the library, or for it to be passed on by someone else. I will only pass this book on to my other english speaking friends here so they don't waste their own money purchasing it.
FUN AND FUMBLES IN THE SEARCH FOR TRUE LOVE (2008-06-04) Chick lit fans probably know all the anticipated plots; they may have seen them all and read them all. But, they definitely haven't heard them all until they give a listen to Lily Rabe's delicious reading of Chasing Harry Winston by The Devil Wears Prada author Lauren Weisberger. A seasoned stage, televison and film actress Rabe gives added verve to this story of three glam New Yorkers approaching thirty and none too happy about it. Accomplished actress that she is Rabe easily shifts from voicing Emmy to Leigh to Adriana. Each of our heroines has distinctly different personalities, which are revealed by this actress's subtle switches in modulation and tone. Despite dissimilarities in character this trio of women have remained steadfast friends since college days. But now as the inevitable 30 looms each decides it is time for a dramatic change and is determined to see it through. Amiable and amenable Emmy is the culinary artist of the group. She'd make a perfect wife and mom but despite these obvious qualifications she has been dropped by Duncan whom she envisioned meeting at the altar. So, Emmy decides since faithfulness hadn't gotten her anywhere she'd play the field - a large field and have sex with a number of men until she finds the perfect one. Leigh is the bookish type, a book editor who likes what she does and loves the man of her dreams, sportscaster Russell. However, when Leigh is assigned to edit the latest by the very attractive young married Jesse Chapman she finds that more than punctuation is involved. Adriana is the predictable bombshell, daughter of wealthy Brazilian parents. She's been more than out and about, and thinks that perhaps the perfect man for her is a famous movie director. Well as they say you have to kiss a few frogs to find your prince. With a Sex and the City backdrop Chasing Harry Winston offers a series of fun and fumbles in the search for true love - enjoy! - Gail Cooke
