Read while you are becoming a teacher (2007-07-28) I read this book after completing my BEd and was not very impressed with it. The book does not contain many details, rather just lists. As well, since I read it after I was finished school and teaching, I did not find it very useful. All the ideas presented in the book were ideas that were covered during my teaching program. However, if I had this book during my own learning and practicums, I think I would have gotten more use out of it.
Read It Before You Start Teaching (2007-01-15) This is an excellent book for new teachers or experienced teachers who want to review classroom management and organizational techniques. A lot of the suggestions require implementation from Day One, so it's best to read the book before you start with a new group of students. There are a lot of ideas in the book that will save you time and money, and there are many ideas that you can use to teach your students to become more self-sufficient. The First Days of School is lacking in depth but it's an easy read full of practical ideas.
This book was a textbook in my BEd. program (2005-08-14) It's well written and full of tips and tricks to make sure your school year is a success. I plan on re-reading it often and having as a resource for years to come. We had a whole theory course in my Bachelor of Education based on his work including the videos.
Help for Teachers! (2004-07-16) It's a known fact that education majors consistently score lowest of all majors - on standardized tests, current affairs quizzes, foreign policy, etc. They enter teaching as softies used to scantron tests in sociology, etc. Assuming they can read at all, they should get this book. And teachers who are in a union shouldn't say knee-jerk, "Not my job." I suggest you read it anyway!
Great for First Year Teachers. (2004-07-09) Last year was my first year as a full time teacher. I was so very nervous and timid before the year began. A professor made a gift to me of "The First Days of School", and "The Child Whisperer." After reading Harry Wong's book, I was more excited to get started teaching but still so very nervous. "The Child Whisperer" gave me some insights into language on a very basic and practical level. I love "The First Days of School" by Harry and Rosemarry Wong and I think it was most effective for me because I also read "The Child Whisperer" by Matt Pasquinilli - especially helpful with ADD/ADHD children.
