The Sporting News Baseball Register 2000 doesn't waste a lot of time with small talk--and that's a good thing. It begins with a brief table of contents and then gets right to the point: providing the detailed career statistics of everyone who played in the majors in 1999, from Jeff Abbott to Michael Zywica. The stats include the usual suspects (batting average, hits, home runs, etc.) as well as birthplace, birth date, schools attended, career transactions, awards, career milestones, and more. The book also provides the statistics of dozens of minor-league prospects and all current major-league managers. In addition, there are sections on the 1999 statistical leaders and Hall of Fame inductees. A fun, thorough, well-done baseball reference guide. --Andy Boynton

Big Improvements (2004-03-02) The 2004 Register is much inproved and I would again recommend it for anyone looking for career stats of current players. It now includes WHIP, on base pct., slugging pct., OPS and more. Because it includes all the minor league stats of each player I think it is far more comprehensive than most competitors's books. I do not know what books some of your other reviewers are talking about because their reviews are way off base.
Baseball Card On Steroids (2004-02-05) Not much useful information in the register. There is much more information available elsewhere, especially in the Bill James Handbooks and online sources. This book only has the barest statistical information. I'm surprised that STATS had anything to do with this because the statistic are so basic.
Where have the good stat books gone... (2004-01-26) Like others, I have to admit my extreme disappointment in this once great series of books. I dearly miss the "Major League Handbook" and "Player Profiles" books previously published by Stats Inc.. To have them replaced by this inferior product a few years ago created a void in the world of baseball stat publications and I can't help but wonder why they even publish it now since this book doesn't really offer anything you can't get for free online. The "Bill James Handbook" since 2003 offers more and is a better choice than this one, though it too could also use more stats included.
The Handbook Is Available (2003-12-19) For those lamenting the demise of the STATS handbook, it's back in print, published by ACTA, as the Bill James Handbook. You can find it at the baseballinfosolutions website.
Can't just appreciate it for what it is. (2003-07-21) You must face facts. This book killed the revolutionary STATS Major and Minor League Handbook series. The Sporting News is over 125 years old, and it shows in this book. It is unfortunate that the publishers would choose this book in favor of the STATS series, and rather apparent that it was done in an "everyone knows the Sporting News brand name!" sort of way. It is awful to see the infinitely superior STATS series slain by the mighty dollar.
