This animated musical remake of the 1933 classic King Kong is definitely for the younger crowd, who will appreciate the tuneful but generic score by Richard and Robert Sherman (better known for Mary Poppins and other Disney scores) and won't get upset by the happy ending. Dudley Moore hams it up as the show-biz impresario seeking the great ape and The Little Mermaid's spirited Jodi Benson lends her pipes as the out-of-work actress who becomes the object of Kong's affections. The animation is clunky, Saturday-morning quality and the dialogue strictly juvenile, but the colorful visuals and scary (but not too scary) monsters make it engrossing viewing for kids. --Sean Axmaker

You do not want King Kong singing his way into your heart (2002-05-05) The fact that this was a direct-to-video film should have been a big clue that this 1997 animated musical version of "King Kong" was going to be less than stellar. But then we have Dudley Moore doing the voice of both entrepreneur Carl Denham and Kong himself, while Jodi Benson lend's her singing voice to the role of Ann Darrow. Add to that the fact the songs are written by the Sherman Brothers, best known for "Mary Poppins." But while the songs are decent the animation is sub-standard even for a Saturday morning cartoon and while I can appreciate the desire to give the story a happy ending for the benefit of the kiddies, I do not really appreciate the idea of taking away the pathos from the story. Besides, one day the kiddies will see the 1933 original and even though it is in black & white and has very little singing (e.g., the natives chanting on Skull Island), they are going to notice it is a much darker tale (duh). Yes, something similar worked with "Beauty and the Beast," but that did not require changing the ending. So while this will keep the kiddies entertained on a rainy day, why not just avoid this and let them see the classic Fay Wray version instead.
DON"T BUY THIS VIDEO!!! (2002-01-06) A stupefyingly awful animated version of King Kong (which means it is still better than the live-action remake of the 70's, all copies of which should be confiscated and burned.). Whose bright idea was it to make kids wait through 40 minutes of bad songs before even getting to the island? After which Kong takes on all prehistoric comers in a tag-team match lasting about 5 minutes total. Then we get more bad songs. If you already own the original movie (an all-time great adventure) and you want to buy your children a Kong-related product try Anthony Brown's pretty decent storybook retelling. But skip this embarassingly bad piece of dreck! I'd give it no stars if that were an option.
