Hayley Mills was well on her way to adulthood when she found intrigue and chaste romance on the island of Crete in this 1964 Disney attempt at Hitchcock in one of his lighter moods. That means the principals do wind up in a hearse trapped on a narrow street by celebratory but ominous masked paraders. And that seemingly good guys can and do turn out to be bad guys and vice versa. But it's Disney and Mills, so there are no deaths in this mystery, although gunplay and some scariness do earn it a PG rating. Based on the Mary Stewart novel of the same name, this 118-minute film finds Mills and her aunt visiting a Cretan village on holiday. In the face of hostility from their innkeeper's brother (Eli Wallach), the pair befriend a fellow Brit. The young man's escapades with jewel thief Wallach draw a beguiled Mills into a sometimes perilous adventure involving a harrowing ride upon the sails of a windmill, hiding out in an underground crypt, and a showdown with a cheetah-loving millionairess (the scene-stealing Pola Negri) aboard her yacht. Probably a little too sophisticated for those under 8. --Kimberly Heinrichs

No jolts, no surprises, no crisis arises (2007-02-27) The adorable Hayley Mills we fell in love with in "Pollyanna" and "The Parent Trap" doesn't fare so well in this mis-guided suspense drama. Teenage Nikky Ferris (Mills) and her musicologist aunt (Joan Greenwood) are visiting Crete to collect folk songs. They stay at the Moon-Spinners Inn, owned by the very sinister Stratos (Eli Wallach) and his meek sister (Irene Papas). There, Nikky meets fellow Brit Mark Camford, who is both charming and mysterious, and likes to roam the coastline alone at night. As the plot thickens, Nikky learns the connection between Mark and Stratos and finds her life is in danger. This poorly-written story never builds up any intensity because the audience isn't let in on the secret for more than half of the film. Up until then, the characters seem to meander endlessly and aimlessly around the island; people are shot and kidnapped, but since we don't know why, we don't care. There are no real thrills, the outcome is never in question, and the trumped-up romance is awkward. The idea of giving Hayley a more grown-up role falls flat, as the victim of teenage complexion and pudginess still looks like a hyper-active youngster, way too young for her leading man. Wallach and Greenwood overact shamelessly while Papas is wasted with just a few lines. The island photography is lovely, but many outdoor scenes are obviously filmed in a studio. Hayley's many fans may enjoy this film, but it was disappointing for me.
Too Disney-fied (2007-02-10) A great story by Mary Stewart is mutilated by Disney. Will we ever learn?Nikky Ferris (a rather pudgy and blotchy Hayley Mills) is on holiday with her aunt Frances (Joan Greenwood). They find themselves unwanted by the local hotel owner (the famous Greek actress Irene Papas) and her abrasive brother (Eli Wallach). Little do they suspect that they will get involve in a nefarious international plot; One in which you can not tell the good guys from the bad until it is too late.On the plus is a lot of good scenery. And how they could pay Irene Papas "Elektra" (1962) to be in this movie one can only guess. The real problem with this film is that Disney got a hold of it and turned a mystery into a farce. Nikky spills the beans more than once and is bratty when called upon to be decisive. She is naïve and quite bratty for her age. The other characters are quite sophomoric most of the time. And too many times we must suspend any logic in figuring out where the runners are hiding and how the hunters no right where to get them. The story has a swift and inconsistent sort of ending.
Now I want to go to Crete and have an adventure!!!! (2004-06-28) The Moon-Spinners has to be one of my favorite movies of all time. Hayley Mills is the all-american girl....err...except for the fact that she's English (it makes no sense, but it is completely true). She gives a genuine performance and most girls can relate to her. I will not deny that this movie is completely cheesy, but it is all in the best way. This movie has everything; adventure, romance, drama, mystery, and is set in the beautiful isle of Crete. The love story is unique and original and will make you smile all over. This movie was acclaimed for being Hayley Mill's first onscreen kiss and I have to admit that it's a good one. I love how this movie embodies the essence of crete, with the beautiful beaches and little villages. I recommend this movie to people of all ages.
I love this movie, but... (2004-06-08) I will not buy the DVD until I can get it in a W-I-D-E-S-C-R-E-E-N Edition!!! What good is beautiful Crete if it's panned, scanned, sliced, diced, and squashed? I want the whole picture, not 2/3rds!
Great movie! Full of exitment and adventure! (2004-05-09) I think this is a wonderful movie that can be seen again and again! The acting is very good and there are some exiting moments to add suspense.Hayley Mills and Peter McEnerny are both exellent in their roles and the acting of Irene Papas and Eli Wallach was also very good. You should get this movie and watch it with your children, it will be a great experience!
