While most of the recent outpouring of gay cinema tries to coast on a smile and a little bit of charm, Trick provides some considerable filmmaking cojones to back up its good looks: a talented cast, a witty screenplay, and a sweet sense of romance. Unfolding as part stressed-out fever dream and part farce, Trick chronicles one tumultuous night in the life of aspiring Broadway songwriter Gabe (Christian Campbell), who's suffering from both a heterosexual roommate (who kicks him out when there's female companionship) and a bad case of writer's block. Making an impulsive side trip to a gay bar, he locks eyes with a hunky go-go boy (J.P. Pitoc), who magically appears later that night on the subway, with amorous intentions to boot. Hotfooting their way back to Gabe's apartment, they're interrupted in medias res by Gabe's roommate, girlfriend in tow. From there it's downhill fast, as the two unsuccessfully scramble to find a place to finish things up. On their nighttime odyssey, though, both discover that there's more than sex and heat to their interaction. And much like its premise, Trick evolves from what seems to be a quickie one-night stand to something more substantial, a film with heart and a very funny soul. Jason Schafer's screenplay puts the luckless couple into one bind after another, and furnishes them with incredibly entertaining dialogue; fortunately, both the leads are up to the challenge of bringing it to life. Campbell (Neve's older brother) has a sweet smile and gentle comic timing; the surprise, however, is Pitoc, whose chiseled physique belies both a wicked sense of humor and a sincere-without-being-gooey romantic streak. Both are aided and abetted by a finely tuned supporting cast, most notably Clinton Leupp as an acidic, motor-mouthed drag queen and Tori Spelling in a go-for-broke star turn as Campbell's best friend, a painfully bad singer-actress. By the end of the movie, you'll be entirely won over, and anxiously awaiting a second date and more from these actors and filmmakers. --Mark Englehart

Slick! (2008-04-05) Cutie-Pie Christian Campbell & Hunk-of-the-Month JP Pitoc star in this "Here!" TV movie about one night in the life of two young guys just lookin' for a place to do it. The laughs are few & far between but the attractive cast, the pre-millenium NY skyline and the music sound track make this earnest & nostalgic piece of fluff quite watchable. 90min.
"Trick "for sure (2004-06-26) A highly entertaining story about two sexy men making it in New York. A romantic story line. Highly recommended.
Must See! Even if you are not gay! (2004-05-02) How often have I been disappointed by gay-themed films? Countless. They are often too stereo-typed, too sexual consious, too racial conscious, or simply just damn. Then, TRICK came out and my friends and I were so entertained! The story is about two young gay boys, one is a hot go-go dancer (Mark) and the other is a wanna-be-a-musical writer (Gabriel), meeting up, and spending a night together in NYC. Though the first intention of both of them was just getting off as a one night stand, things did not go well as they planned when much drama started happening around them... The movie is so sweet and, the best thing is, NOT unrealistic. What these two gay boys experience over night are happening to many gay youth (though surely in different levels and situations). I believe most of gay guys can feel Gabriel's excitement about the chance of having a go-go over his place, and those good looking ones can relate Mark's twisted feeling about being always seen as a sex object and his overly sexual attitude to fight against it. And even non-gay can agree with the story and the character's feelings to a great extent (according to my straight friends). Boys or girls, gay or straight, this film definetly will bring you a warm heart feeling and smile. If you cannot enojoy this film, you need to admit that you are somewhat too jaded!!
No trick, just a great film! (2004-03-13) "Trick" is a charming, thoroughly engaging, comedy-romance. It is brilliantly written, excellently directed, and superbly acted. The total production is of the highest quality (even the original music is fantastic!). A rare gem of a film!
not the best (2004-02-03) The movie was a little bit entertaining, but overall it was bad , bad acting , especially the irritating Tori Spelling, bad story and a little bit boring!
