Promoting Peace (2008-08-13) Three Cups of Tea delivers a message every person needs to understand. This is the story of how Greg Mortenson has worked, beyond what seems humanly possible, since 1993 to build schools in Pakistan and Afghanistan. Mortenson is quoted in the book as saying "...working over there, I've learned a few things. I've learned that terror doesn't happen because some groups of people somewhere like Pakistan or Afghanistan simply decide to hate us. It happens because children aren't being offered a bright enough future that they have a reason to choose life over death." He has been befriended and if there could be such a word `befamilied' by local residents because they have seen firsthand that his commitment is personal. Mortenson has continually been confronted with the objections that building schools may be nice but security has to come first, to which he replies: at the time the book was written there had been perhaps 114 Tomahawk cruise missiles fired into Afghanistan at a cost of approximately $840,000 each. For the cost of just one of those missiles, Mortenson says, dozens of schools could be built that could provide tens of thousands of student with a balance nonextremist education over the course of a generation. 'Which', he asks, 'do you think will make us more secure?' He quotes figures that astonish those of us who do not understand the reality of these remote villages in which he works. Through the Central Asia Institute for which Greg Mortenson works they can educate a child for $1/month, a teacher's salary is $1/day. One man, having seen a need in a land far from home, has demonstrated for us the power of simply asking "how can I help".
Amazing - a must read (2008-08-10) This book is a must read for everyone who wants an insight into the real solution to life post 9/11. The book is inspiring and educational. I have recommended to mu children.
An incredible & inspirational story! (2008-08-10) I was initially drawn to read the book based on the outdoor/climbing aspects of the story that my wife mentioned that I might enjoy. As I got into the book however the story of Greg Mortenson's life and his legacy of building schools in Central Asia were so incredibly insiprational that I couldn't put the book down. Life can get pretty busy and finding time to read typically means a few pages late at night after the kids go to bed and after finishing some work on the laptop yet with this book I found myself reading it all the time to find out what happens to Greg as he pursues his passion for building schools in some of the most remote and dangerous places in the world. I was reading it so often that my oldest son even noticed and commented that "hey I didn't know that you read novels daddy".This is a must read book for anyone and the best non-fiction I have ever read!
Thinking of "Three Cups of Tea" makes me feel good. (2008-08-07) This is a true story, has the unmistakable 'feel' of a true story, and yet it is difficult to believe. How could one man achieve so much? How can his vision be so clearly right, so attainable, and yet out of reach of all the major powers in the world. This is not the story of how a major religion was founded but it is equally powerful, equally compelling and written so it entertained and uplifted.Michael.R.Harris
ONE CUP OF ADVENTURE, ONE OF AWE AND ONE OF PROFOUND HUMANITY (2008-07-13) I am writing this because Greg Mortenson suggests a review of this book as one way of helping his cause and his cause is world peace - it is the least I can do in light of the supreme sacrifices he and his family are making. This is a remarkable story that is so full of adventure, plot twists, political intrigue, romance and suspense that it could practically write itself. Yet the writing is exquisite in that it takes us through so much with ease, clarity and emotion. You are drawn into the story on the first page and you are with Greg, not reading about him. I feel like I have traveled with him and know the terrain of his experiences. Before I started the book I thought I would just skim it to get the essence of the story but something interesting happens on every page and you don't want to miss one word. One cup of adventure takes you through mountains, enemy territories, Greg's own poverty and sacrifices, and the rough terrains of the political realities. One cup of awe leaves you dumbstruck by the majestic beauty of the landscapes and the sheer force and strength of Greg, his family and his team of courageous souls. And one cup of profound humanity leaves you thankful and full of hope for the future of humankind.
