A Must Read for Everyone (2008-05-09)  The Second Vatican Council closed in 1965, and shortly thereafter, the Catholic Church split into two distinct factions. On the one hand were those who saw the council documents as justification for throwing out Catholic doctrine, and on the other were those who vigorously resisted them. Among those who resisted the abandonment of doctrine were people who realized that the Council was, in fact, a much overdue recognition of the true relationship between religion and culture. Those level-headed few were a minority, however, and most simply dug in their heels while silently or otherwise looking upon the Second Vatican Council as a huge mistake.Carl Anderson's book reveals what the council was really all about. His eloquent appeal urges all Catholics to come together to work for the reform of secular culture, which has become corrupt through neglect. The dismantlers of Catholic doctrine, along with those of their opponents who identify the perfect Catholic as a priest and the ideal layman as one who performs sub-ministerial duties in or around the Church, both stand in the way of the Church's mission. The council document on the laity makes that mission clear. And a dedicated laity is the key to its successful accomplishment.
