This comprehensive book explains in lucid, assured terms how to practice the fertility awareness method (FAM), a natural, scientifically proven but little-known form of birth control (which is not to be confused with the woefully ineffective "rhythm" method). Author Toni Weschler has been teaching fertility awareness for almost 20 years, and it's only just now gaining in popularity. As the book explains, by using simple fertility signs including peaks in morning body temperature and changes in cervical position and cervical mucus, it's possible to determine when ovulation is taking place. Fertility awareness is therefore useful for not only couples who are trying to conceive, but for those who are aiming to avoid pregnancy without the use of chemical contraceptives. It will be of special interest to those women who have suffered from infertility; many FAM practitioners have told the author that by filling in the detailed charts in the book, they've realized that they were chronically miscarrying, even when their doctors told them they weren't conceiving at all. As the book explains, by charting body temperature, it's simple to tell when pregnancy has occurred--and when there's danger of miscarriage. Taking Charge of Your Fertility also explains how to choose the sex of your baby by timing intercourse according to certain fertility signs. It also features thorough, easy-to-understand explanations of hormones, the menstrual cycle, and menopause, along with fertility tests and treatments and their long- and short-term side effects, plus a topnotch resource section. Recommended for any woman who wants to better understand her body. --Erica Jorgensen

Also helpful for perimenopausal or POF women (2008-03-05) I have premature ovarian failure (POF) and I have found the FAM method extremely helpful in predicting periods (I get a few days notice), and ovulation even though I have very irregular or infrequent periods. If my period is several weeks late, I can tell if i am actually pregnant or if its just my POF. I save a ton of money on pee tests because the other physical symptoms are so reliable in telling me why my period is late: I dont have to worry about the possibility of being pregnant everytime my period is over 28 days (which happens most of the time). The chart tells me exactly whats going on. Its a bit of work, but well worth it I think for women having infertility problems.
Truly Exceptional and a Must have! (2006-03-20) I was deeply impressed and pleased with this book. I am a Ph. D in Sexuality and know a lot about fertility and conception. I absolutely agree that the information is essential especially for young women because it will put their mind at ease about several normal, physiological changes that happen within their bodies. I also agree that the FAM method is better than the “rhythm method” and that’s why I highly recommend it to my female clients. I am happy that this great book becomes more and more popular. It is truly the “bible” when it comes to how the female body functions. I would like to strongly recommend in addition to it Alan Ritz’ “Scientifically guaranteed male multiple orgasms and ultimate sex”, which I believe is the equivalent of this book for the male body. Also if your husband has any sexual problems (premature ejaculation, low libido, (semi) impotence and even infertility he will find a lot of first class and science-based information in it. It is pleasure to highly recommend both bestsellers. Barbara Catherwood PH.D in Sexuality
Excellent Book (2006-03-11) This book should be the bible for any woman who is trying to be a mom. Its so informative and accurate. The accuracy in this book amazed me. It’s easy to read.
5 stars (2005-12-06) This book was recommended to me by a friend and I have been raving about it to anyone who will listen ever since. Although the book doesn't and couldn't cover everything with respect to trouble-shooting (every woman has her own "quirks"), the book was tremendously informative and a fun, easy read. If you are looking for a book to understand your body better, stop! This is it.
possibly the best book in the world (2005-10-15) Every woman should pass this book on to everyone they know of childbearing age!
